Getting your map printed: paper, DPI and print shops

A good print starts with the right file. Here is what to keep in mind.

Resolution

The PNG download is exported at 300 dpi, the usual standard for sharp prints viewed up close. At 300 dpi an A4 poster is about 2480 × 3508 pixels and an A1 about 7016 × 9933 pixels.

Vector downloads (SVG, PDF) have no fixed resolution; the print shop renders them at the size you order.

Paper

Matte paper shows fine lines without glare and suits most map styles. Satin or glossy paper makes dark styles such as Bold and Dark Matter look deeper. A heavier paper weight feels more like a real poster.

At home or at a print shop

A4 and A3 are fine on many home or office printers. For A2 and A1, use a print or copy shop and send them the PDF or PNG.

Print a small test first to check the colors, because every printer and screen shows color slightly differently.

Frequently asked questions

Why do colors look different on paper?
Screens show color with light (RGB), printers with ink (CMYK). Small differences are normal; a test print helps.
Which file is best for a print shop?
The PDF from the Vector High download, or ask the print shop which format they prefer.
